Luis von
Ahn is a recipient of the MacArthur Fellow Award and has been named
one of the fifty best brains in science by Discover Magazine, Popular
Science Magazine's top ten brilliant people, and Silicon.com's fifty
most influential people in technology.
I am creating the international symbol for Pi with Luis in the picture below. Luis talked with me about Human Computations. He created the CAPTCHA security puzzle that is found on most login web sites. Luis has harnessed human time and energy to address problems that computers cannot yet solve. Although computers have advanced significantly over the past five decades, they still do not have the basic conceptual intelligence or perceptual capabilities that people take for granted. By leveraging human skills and abilities in a novel way, Luis solves large scale computational problems and collects data to teach computers many basic human talents. Luis treats each human brain that logs into the internet as a processor in a distributed system, each performing a small part of a massive computation. Unlike computers, people require an incentive in order to become part of a collective computation so games are used as a means to encourage participation in the process. Luis has earned his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. |
